I’ve always debated the concept of gender equality, which often infuriates my feminist friends. To me, women should not demand to be equal because they’re far more empowered than men. And it is the men who should call for equality, if anything. But my friends always remind me about our outdated and rotten laws who do not give women their rights. And I find this amusing because, in a country where Parliament Members and Ministers do not respect the Constitution and extend their terms illegally, there are people who still advocate for laws to protect and guarantee women’s rights! Call me ignorant, but I still don’t understand why do people care about the texts, when in practice, women are way more powerful than men and we all know it! Even men know it!
Let me be clear: I am not against feminism (in moderate doses), and I don’t hate men either. I don’t think I will ever be able to live without them anyway. I am a strong woman - who according to a friend needs to “be disempowered”. And it isn’t the law who empowered me in the first place. In fact, in my country, the law doesn’t provide me with enough rights, but even if it did, I will still have to work hard every day to make sure I get them.
I try not to be blinded by this whole “equality” and “empowerment” hype. I think whoever invented this heresy was a man. And the reason why men created this “concept” is because they wanted to alleviate some of the burdens that society has placed on them especially those related to providing for their family. And of course, women, fell into the trap, and ended up doing it all… from getting pregnant, to raising the kids, taking care of the house and even competing with men in the workplace. I am sure the latter statement will enrage some of you… but in my defense, let me lay down some facts:
1. The leader of the Free World is… a woman!
2. The cause of the split between sects was… a woman.
3. The person who takes all decisions in almost every household is… a woman! Growing up, we all knew that “ask your dad”, was just a decoy.
4. The person who was behind raising all these assholes that are running the world or your lives was… a woman.
5. Top management and leadership positions are often occupied by… women. (I wish this fact wasn’t true because it takes a lot of tact to be able to deal with mood swings and menopause symptoms).
6. In the rare cases where men are in power, it is usually “their women” (be it wives, daughters or… mistresses) who control almost everything behind the scenes and run the show. (Note: men can be hormonal too, especially when their wives had denied them some of their… conjugal rights…)
I am an empowered woman, who wishes she wasn’t empowered at all at least for a day so I can trade my long working hours with cooking and cleaning… and my worries about paying the bills with other apprehensions such as ideas for the next day meal… I want to be able to show my weaknesses and give up without being judged. For one day, I want to stop striving to grow and wanting to grab the world by the lapels. I am an empowered woman who knows her value and doesn’t need validation… I am a woman who is tired of fighting lost causes and other people’s battles… I am a woman who simply wants to chill…
