Are You Happy, or Are You Just Pretending?
I have been asking this same question to a number of friends for the past few weeks and out of more than a dozen of people, I only received one affirmative answer!
The other answers ranged between "I am borderline suicidal" to "of course I am" before they burst into tears...
The most interesting part is that none of these people ever admitted that they were unhappy because even when you're dead from the inside, it is mandatory to make everyone jealous with your life on social media. That's how it works!
There is always this person who will try to convince you that happiness is a matter of perspective. And that if you lower your expectations and standards, you will be happy... Or, there is this other person who tries to challenge you by asking you to find a definition for happiness "what is happiness anyway?" or even better "you create your own happiness"! But the most infuriating answer is: "but aren't we all unhappy?" as if unhappiness is a normal feeling that everyone must constantly experience and embrace.
Unhappiness is not normal. It shouldn't be. Being happy is everyone's right not a luxury that only a handful of "lucky" people can savor. Happiness should be effortless. We all deserve to be genuinely happy. But finding happiness is not simple too...
It takes courage to distance ourselves from all the negativity that surrounds us and the things that bring us down: stressful jobs, toxic relationships, unhealthy environments... Walking away from all of these doesn't only require boldness. You need to stop settling for things that seem comfortable and easy, face your fear of change and uncertainty and grab every potential opportunity of happiness... because sometimes happiness can be found in the most unexpected places.
