No, We Shouldn't Get Used to It!

I was driving down the seaside road the other day and I was struck by a billboard that read "Didn't you get used to it? Let Trident be your refreshing habit"... The habit that Trident marketing geniuses were referring to was traffic! Not only did I find the slogan stupid and lacking creativity but also infuriating... It's a shame that marketing experts are now encouraging apathetic behaviors and inviting people to be passive...

No, traffic is not okay so does the garbage that is piling up in the streets because our Government isn't willing to come up with a plan unless it serves the various political parties' financial interests.
No, it is not okay that our country has been without a president for almost two years now and that people say "it's fine, we got used to it. The President does not have any power since the Taef agreement anyway!"
No, it is not okay that our Parliament has extended its own term and that the MPs get their salaries but aren't doing their jobs. (Would you get paid if you weren't doing your job?)
No, it is not okay to pay a $120 generator bill when our Government has imported a $370 million power ship from Turkey to supposedly overcome chronic electricity shortages.
No, it is not okay to rely on water trucking when the country borders the Mediterranean sea and has countless water sources.
No, it is not okay that people still die in front of hospitals because they don't have insurance or cash.
No, it is not okay that the security situation is so volatile and that arms are more available than water and electricity.
No, it not okay that people party in one part of the country while the other part is war torn.
No, it is not okay to blame the 1.2 million refugees for our misery when our Government dissociated itself from the crisis in the first place.
No, it is not okay for young Lebanese to board ships that transport refugees to Europe in search of a better future and die on the way.
No, it is not okay that Lebanese youth are fighting another country's war.
No, it is not okay that most young people's ambitions are limited to immigration and acquiring dual citizenships.
No, it is not okay that people still follow their political leaders blindly in spite of their proven record of corruption and criminality.
No, it is not okay to live in uncertainty and keep waiting for the next war.
No, it is not okay that foreign countries decide on our future president and wage our future wars.
No, it is not okay that the majority of the population has lost hope and gave up on the country.
No, it not okay that people say "we got used to it" as if that was their only choice.

These aren't habits, no, these are terrible vices... And no matter how much gum we will chew, we shouldn't get used to it... Democracies are supposed to give power to the people... People who take their rights seriously, who find pride in a common identity and who do not chew their problems over but act upon them.
